Today, ESL announced that it will bring its popular tournament series, ESL One, to Los Angeles for the first Dota 2 Major to ever be played on the west coast.
From March 20-22, the historic Shrine Auditorium in Downtown Los Angeles will see a slew of international teams battling for their cut of the $1M USD prize pool.
“Los Angeles is known for world-class entertainment and that is exactly what we aim to deliver with the L.A. Major,” said Ulrich Schulze, senior vice president of product at ESL.
“We are finally bringing our ESL Dota 2 flagship competition to the US West Coast for the first time and we are proud to deliver world-class Dota 2 action to the local community. With ESL One Los Angeles, we will put a stake in the ground to engage the US-based Dota 2 community and introduce one of our most iconic tournaments to a new location: the Shrine Auditorium conveying an absolute unique feel.”
Los Angeles, while being the home to Riot Games and Blizzard Entertainment, has not hosted many high-profile esports events or championships for the “Big Four” esports (League of Legends, Overwatch, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike) or others, with the last championship in the Los Angeles area being the Call of Duty League World Championships which took place at the Forum in Inglewood, California, in 2016.
